You say we are the salt of Earth and ask
what good is salt that has turned flavorless,
and as I see the icy streets, a task
for it occurs to me – to be a dress
on roads to keep the passing cars from slipping,
so though it’s not in use as condiment
it helps to keep pedestrians from tripping,
and has a purpose for which it is meant.
So when I am like salt that lost its flavor,
please likewise find another use for me,
though I not be like salt that one can savor,
I hope there’s something helpful I can be.
My loss of flavor may have been my fault,
but may I have more uses, as does salt.
