Arboreal Fable

A tree does not concern itself with whether
it’s serving others with its growing tall,
nor fret for housing birds of every feather
and woodland creatures, mostly very small,
nor feel that if it doesn’t give itself
that means it isn’t living as it should,
if it does not become for books a shelf
by sacrificing for their sake its wood.
And yet by simply growing toward the light,
it gives us beauty, oxygen, and shade,
without a thought for what is wrong or right
but living for its growth as it was made.
It needn’t choose – itself or others – both
will benefit if it lives for its growth.
